History
The Richard Grant Fund was established in November 2005 to honor our founder and long time Music Director, Richard Grant. At that time, The Pacific Mozart Ensemble (PME) had just appeared in our debut performance at Carnegie’s Zankel Hall in New York, and Richard was taking over the artistic direction of the group, with Lynne Morrow continuing his work as the Music Director.
Since founding PME, Richard has directed the group in more than 200 concerts, presenting innovative programs from all periods and styles of music. He has established a reputation for programming the current work of the most important contemporary composers, such as John Adams, Meredith Monk, David Lang and Philip Glass, often by special arrangement before the works are published for concert performance.
One of Richard’s goals for the Ensemble is to have the ability to embark upon recording projects of pieces by composers, such as Dave Brubeck or Meredith Monk, whose work PME has performed and premiered in the past. Another hope for the future of PME is for the group to have the funds to commission pieces specifically for them; or to have the ability to hire instrumentalists or a specific performance venue, whenever programming for a concert season would warrant it.
Purpose
Having been established by the members of PME, The Richard Grant Fund is emerging as a valuable support for the organization’s future, funding unique, musical experiences that otherwise could not be brought to fruition. The purpose of the fund is to support new initiatives that are non-routine to PME’s general operations and expand the group’s musical development. Examples include, but are not limited to: recording projects outside our general concert season; rent for recording equipment or space; cost of a performance venue or hiring of instrumentalists for specific projects.
Management of the Fund
Initial donations to the Richard Grant Fund were made by the members of the PME, surpassing $5,000. Suggestions for disbursement of funds will be considered by the Richard Grant Fund committee (Kate Berenson, Richard Grant, Kathie Longinotti and Mari Marjamaa), who in turn will make recommendations to the Pacific Mozart Ensemble’s Board of Directors for suitable projects.
